Many GCSE Maths marks are awarded for clear working, not just the final answer. If a student skips too many steps, they can lose method marks even when they mostly understood the question.
Show every important step
A good rule is to write down the formula, substitution, rearrangement, or calculation stage before jumping to the answer. This gives the examiner something to award if a small arithmetic mistake happens later.
Check the question command carefully
Students often lose marks because they answer a slightly different question from the one asked. Before starting, underline the key information: units, rounding instructions, whether the answer needs to be exact, and whether working must be shown.
Write units throughout the answer
Units help students spot whether their answer makes sense. For area, volume, speed, density, pressure, and compound measure questions, carrying units through the calculation can prevent wrong final answers.
Practise explaining methods, not just repeating them
Revision is strongest when students can explain why a method works. Topic practice is useful, but mixed practice is where exam confidence grows.
